Our Present Time, 2020
Artshack Gallery, Brooklyn, NY
For me, making objects is also about bringing people together—mostly interaction in public. But the pandemic forced me to adapt. In the summer of 2020, I was in residence at Artshack, a community-centered clay studio in Brooklyn. I was challenged with extreme limitations in developing my project, Our Present Time. My solution was to give the residents of the Bed-Stuy neighborhood a humble offering—a pound of clay and an invitation to join a weekly Zoom meeting during June and July. In this way I provided a virtual space for people to come together weekly to take a break from all the pressures we were experiencing (the impact of the coronavirus, ongoing police violence and racial injustices) and instead, for just an hour, focus on guided mindfulness exercises that made use of clay. At the end of this residency, I collected the mindfulness-based works from participants and installed them in a window-display exhibition at the Artshack gallery. This exhibition was also an exchange, where participating artists received a work by another artist by letting go of a work of their own. I also led Our Present Time sessions for the Exceptional Foundation, an Atlanta-based organization that provides services to adults with disabilities. Their works were added to the ongoing exhibition in Brooklyn with their names included in the roster of exhibiting artists.
